They’re also a great opportunity for individuals seeking a new or better career. In fact, people with disabilities are more likely to be self-employed than people without disabilities. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, among employed people with disabilities, nearly 12 percent were self-employed in 2011, compared to just 6.6 percent of people without disabilities.

So, too, are opportunities for people to strike out on their own and start their own businesses. Self-employment is a very important – but often overlooked – component of local economic health, especially in rural areas. In Southwest Minnesota, self-employment accounts for nearly 70 percent of the businesses and as much as 15 percent of the jobs in the region!
